 Reena Sommer, Ph.D.
Dr. Reena Sommer is a divorce and custody consultant with expertise in high conflict divorce and custody disputes. For the past 18 years, she has assisted people struggling with the challenges of divorce and parenting their children post divorce. She has served as a divorce and custody strategist to her clients and their attorneys in developing innovative approaches to overcoming challenging issues such as false allegations of abuse, blocked access and other tactics used by some parents to destroy the relationship their child has with the other parent. Dr. Sommer has provided expert testimony in courts in Canada and the U.S.A.on issues related to parenting, custody, child protection, the Parental Alienation Syndrome and domestic violence. Dr. Sommer received her doctoral degree in psychology, family studies and sociology from the University of Manitoba in 1994. In 1992, she became internationally known for her work in domestic violence and received scholarly accolades and awards for her contributions to research in this area. At that time, Dr. Sommer spoke out against "Zero Tolerance" policies of domestic violence; policies that are now being reviewed for the flaws that she had identified. Since that time, Dr. Sommer has written extensively on issues relating to violence in the family, addictions & codependency. She also has written numerous articles on divorce and custody which can be found online. Additionally, Dr. Sommer has published a number of divorce and custody related information products. As her career progressed, Dr. Sommer's interest in high conflict relationships led her toward developing expertise in the areas of divorce, custody and the Parental Alientation Syndrome. This was preceded by taking training in the assessment and treatment of parental alienation syndrome under Dr. Richard Gardner with whom she remained in close contact until his untimely death in May 2003. Dr. Sommer has been an invited speaker to academic, government and lay audiences in Canada and the U.S. In May, 1998, Dr. Sommer was invited to testify before the Joint Senate-House of Commons Committee on Custody and Access. More recently in April 2002, she was invited once again by the Canadian government to participate in a panel of experts from Canada and the United States to revisit the findings of the Joint Senate-House of Commons Committee. Over the years, Dr. Sommer has been repeatedly called upon for commentary by the media on issues relating to divorce, custody and domestic violence. She has been interviewed by major U.S. and Canadian newspapers, Readers' Digest, Chatelaine Magazine, C.B.C. and C.T.V. local and national News and numerous radio stations in the U.S. and Canada as well as consulted with the producers of the Dr. Phil Show. Dr. Sommer maintains an office but has clients throughout the USA, Canada and Great Britain because of her accessibility via the Internet. Her practice involves consulting with attorneys, mental health professionals, and parents on matters relating to divorce, child custody, family reunification, domestic violence and the Parental Alienation Syndrome. A major thrust of her work is in the area of separation and divorce and assisting divorcing couples explore options in restructuring their lives so that their children's interests and needs are protected. Dr. Sommer is guided by the belief that children should not be denied a relationship with their parents simply because their moms and dads decide to divorce. In her capacity as a divorce and trial consultant. Dr. Sommer helps families redefine and restructure themselves during the divorcing process so that children and parents can maintain a positive connection with each other.
